What Is The Point?

By: Brett

I was wondering what the point is of having “Democrats” and “Republicans”.. Maybe I’m completely oblivious to how our government works, but wouldn’t it work just fine if we abolished the parties and just let our congressman/women take stands on their own? What is the benefit of having a party when in today’s current state, we have people voting for the opposing sides. I do understand that making a party, allows for more backing on certain bills/laws, but don’t you think that if someone drafts up sound legislation that it will pass regardless. People won’t be influenced to vote one way or the other (Democrat/Republican) they will vote for the person that has like values.

To me it feels like the Republicans and the Democrats are playing in the World Baseball Classic.. (for some reason USA got two teams in, team 1 and 2 - that’s a whole different post). Both teams are in the final game. Everyone wants the USA to win but these two teams are out there duking it out for mere bragging rights really. The goal is to make the United States better, not an individual party.

There just seems to be so much back and forth, he said she said accusing in politics today that nothing gets resolved. We are suppose to be working together to figure out our problems, not denouncing someone else for how they believe we can make this world a better place. When someone like Ann Coulter comes out and talks about wishing people were terrorists so she could bomb them, or calling people “the F word”.. we could all just write her off, instead of associating her with the right. When some crazy on the left goes off on the 9/11 conspiracy we can just say, “Wow, that’s F-ed Up.” But there is always this extreme left and right that wouldn’t exist if they didn’t have an affiliation to hide behind. Again I could totally be off on why these two parties exist. I’m sure I’m missing some point, or maybe I’m being completely far-fetched about all of this, but I’d really like to know why these parties matter today.

It all comes down to power.

The formation of parties exists in order to organize people behind central and fundamental ideas. When people are organized, they have more ability to get things done together then if they were alone. They have more power.

United we stand, divided we fall.

It’s almost like hunting in a pack. In order to get the prey, the wolves will band together and work for each other, which ultimately benefits the pack. Likewise, the people form packs, or parties, in order to secure the things they want fundamentally: secure borders, economic freedom, socialized schools, etc.,

At least that’s my take on it. Awesome site btw!

“United we stand, divided we fall.” - That really echoes the times we are in right now. Maybe I’ve reached that point in my life where these things are more evident to me, but today we seem to argue more with eachother, rather than discuss the matters at hand.

I agree with the idea of organizing people behind a common belief system.. but that could also work without party affiliation. I guess I’m just really tired of constant trash talking and lack of production out of officials, and that’s blame on both left and right.

Because people are too stupid to figure out what they “stand for” and need political parties to figure that out, plus people are too lazy to read names on the ballot, they just want check the names all down one side and be done with it.

  6. Brett Says:

That is exactly true! And exactly what is wrong with how things are right now. People don’t bother learning about the candidates or anything.. they only see “Democrat” or “Republican” and vote based on those assumptions alone.

Anne, what the hell! Good to hear from you. Hope you and Nick are doing good. Tell him to start commenting on here too.
