The Excitement of Developing
By: Brett
Whenever I get going on a project, it seems to consume my life for that time being. There is something about the excitement that your new site/project is going to change how people use something or just interest a lot of people in a positive way. You always want to draw a large crowd and hopefully get a return on some advertising if you can. That seems to be how most sites are funded and maintained, is by the ad revenue they bring in.
My brother forwarded me an article the other day of a guy who was working on a start-up project for about six months. Well after being side-tracked and delayed several times, the start up collapsed and the guy moved on. In the article his greatest words of advice were to make sure you’re doing something you love, and love what you’re doing it for. If you’re working on a project that you yourself don’t really have a need for, you won’t put in that extra love. There are times when you’re putting something together for a client that you can’t really get that tied into in that degree but when you’re creating sites for yourself in hopes of generating a larger audience, I think the advice of making sure you love what you’re doing rings true.
How that applies to other jobs, I have no idea. I guess just the idea of making sure you are happy with your job and what you’re doing is good enough. There is something out there for anyone to be completely happy with, just a matter of finding that. I think the best way for that, is to expose yourself to as many options as possible. Expand your idea of what makes you happy. Like today for example, I was trying to drain my radiator on my jeep. I was laying on the concrete underneath the jeep and I realized, “wow” I really don’t like being under this hunk of crap and I don’t like working on cars. So I guess being a Mechanic is out of the question for me.
I think I was lucky enough to find something right away that interested me. I was able to achieve two great paths that have made me completely happy, baseball and web development. There is nothing like the one on one battle in baseball. Just the energy rush of being in certain situations throughout the game. I still quench those feelings with a local amateur team in Clearwater, and having a blast doing it. Obviously nothing compares to playing professionally and definitely nothing to playing at Scholastica, but it’s baseball and you gotta love it either way.
My other path also gives me just as much satisfaction, if not more. I don’t really consider myself a very artistic person, especially with the stuff I have seen throughout the Web and things I notice everyday. It’s funny how, when you are designing things, you start to pick up on little details where ever you go. The joy of building websites, for yourself or for a client, is just seeing your work on display for really anyone to see. Being so constructive and seeing things come together is so rewarding.
Well that’s it, just another pointless rant. I’m really waiting for the feud of Leeks vs. Olbermann.. Both have been pretty dormant the last few months, so hopefully there’s a lot of built up tension of Red vs. Blue.

Leeks is too busy to post now that he has accepeted the position of Campaign Manager for Cindy Sheehan in her bid to unseat Nancy Pelosi from Congress. Olbermann predicts a “Love Connection.”
