Just Say No To Reading
By: Brett
Just came across this article about a guy who was reading some article in a Caribou Coffee. A couple days later he received a call from his mother while at work, saying there were two FBI agents at their house. The agents later visited the guy while at work and were questioning him about where and what he was doing on a Saturday morning. They asked him what exactly he was reading that morning. They were informed by an anonymous tip, that a suspicious man was reading some unidentified material.
The guy didn’t remember exactly what he was reading and when he wasn’t able to tell the agents, they started to threaten him. An agent had told him that if he can remember, he won’t be in any trouble, but if he didn’t know there would be severe consequences. I have mixed feelings about this. I am grateful that we have a country that is looking out for us but I am also a little scared about the idea that anyone could call in and give the FBI a tip about a mysterious person simply reading a piece of paper and they go out and start threatening this person. They obviously didn’t look into this tip very much and it’s not like they have been keeping an eye on this guy.
I realize we live in a different world today, but I don’t believe using the excuse of “War on Terror” for explaining every situation can justify it. It was a big deal that this guy received a visit from some FBI agents, but it’s the whole Big Brother looking over your shoulder at everything you do.
Maybe the govenment is implementing a new section: R.A.R.E. - Reading Abuse Resistance Education.
